Cycle training in a primary school

Bikeability

Cyclist training is usually the first time children get guided education about being a road user. They are introduced to skills that they will continue to use as they become older and become drivers and motorcycle riders.

The Road Safety Team manages the delivery of Bikeability within many Suffolk schools.

Bikeability is a practical cycling course delivered at 3 different levels. It covers:

  • bike handling skills,
  • observation and forward planning,
  • risk management,
  • sharing the road with other road users.

Level 1 and 2 Bikeability

A joint Level 1 and 2 course is offered to schools with Year 5 and Year 6 pupils (10 or 11 years old), and this is generally delivered to groups of up to 12 trainees, with 2 hours on the playground and then 6 hours riding on roads. This is delivered within school time. Currently there are over 4000 students being trained annually within Suffolk. It costs the school £180 per group.

Level 3 Bikeability

Level 3 Bikeability is offered to students in Year 7 or Year 8 in the Upper/High schools. It is done in very small groups and, over approximately 3 hours, looks at the routes the trainees want to ride, taking in more complex junctions and urban features. It also looks at route planning. Level 3 is, at the moment, limited in its delivery, with between 50 and 100 students getting training. There is currently no charge for this.
