Speed Prevention in the Community
Automatic Number Plate Recognition Camera project (ANPR)
Suffolk County Council in partnership with the Police and Crime Commisionner and the Constabulary (the Suffolk Roadsafe Partnership), will be trialling the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to tackle speeding hot spots across the county.
The pilot which is funded from SCC’s 2020 fund will run for 2 years. The cameras will be used to help detect and deter speeding offences that have been highlighted in towns and villages and educate drivers on the importance of road safety.
Communities concerned about speeding – Speed Indicator devices (SID) and Temporary VAS
Suffolk County Council, Suffolk Constabulary and the Police and Crime Commissioner have devised a community strategy to tackle speeding concerns. The strategy supports community solutions including community speedwatch, parish and town councils wishing to purchase SIDs and temporary VAS.
Please note that new requests or requests for amendments to existing Temporary VAS and SID schemes will not be processed until at least December 2020. Funding for the work is on hold due to the COVID-19 outbreak. All existing scheme requests will be processed. For more information email: SafetyandSpeedManagement@suffolkhighways.org

Speed Management through engineering
The Council can introduce measures to try to encourage motorists to drive within the speed limit.
However funding will only be available for this type of work where it can be justified in terms of accident reduction. Before any works are carried out, the existing signing and road markings are checked to ensure they meet the current standards.
The personal injury record for a location is checked to see whether funding can be made available to carry out works.
Speed management can include:
- Entry Treatments/Gateways;
- Rumble Strips;
- Carriageway speed limit roundels;
- Road narrowings;
- Priority Systems;
- General signing and road markings;
- Vehicular Activated Signs.
All of the above may have some success in reducing speed, however, all of these measures can have negative effects on the environment in terms of the visual appearance and noise pollution. For more information, please contact email@example.com
