For Schools: Partnering to Build Confident Cyclists

The Suffolk County Council Bikeability team work closely with many schools across Suffolk to deliver high-quality, risk-assessed Bikeability training. All courses are tailored to build on your pupils’ capabilities and are delivered by fully qualified instructors. We deliver a combined Bikeability Level 1 & 2 course to Year 5 or Year 6 children and are launching Bikeability Level 3 courses during Summer 2026.

The latest National full-year delivery statistics from the Bikeability Trust show that:

• Exactly 500,000 Bikeability Level 1, 2, 3 and Plus places were booked nationally (excluding London)—an increase of over 13,000 from the previous year.
• Nearly 64% of primary schools in England (excluding London) participated in Bikeability training.
• Over 58% of Year 5 and 6 pupils were reached across England.
• Children spent nearly 3 million hours cycling with Bikeability

Get Involved

1. Contact Bikeability@suffolk.gov.uk , or call our Bikeability Officer John Showell, on 07515 187353. We will send you a School Information Pack.  Due to the number of schools wanting Bikeability, please start the process as soon as possible.
2. Send out the “Parent/Guardian Information” so that you can judge the number of courses you will need, then complete the School Booking Form to confirm your course(s).

Many schools are booking 12 months ahead, so please try to get parents/guardians involved early.  We can support your school with specific publicity/marketing if required.  If you are struggling to get engagement, there are options within the “Additional Support for Schools” section (below) that we might be able to deliver. We would love to see as many children as possible being able to take part in Bikeability, and are aiming to get more than 80% of Y6 pupils to participate in our combined Level 1 & 2 courses.    

Once the course(s) have been confirmed, you will be given access to our online “Cycle Ready” portal, where you can manage your booking. Cycle Ready will create a QR code to email out to parents/Guardians, who will then enter the details of their own child.  This is a new addition to our system and should significantly reduce school staff administration time.

Our Standard Courses:

We aim to provide combined Bikeability Level 1 & 2 training for all Year 5 or 6 students and deliver Level 3 before they begin Year 7. We also offer Dr Bike maintenance sessions and family cycling workshops to extend the impact beyond the school gates.

A new model of delivery
We are currently working with Northgate Upper School, which has offered to host holiday courses. To help increase the number of students cycling to school, we are offering Level 1 & 2 courses for children from feeder primary schools who were unable to access training at their own school. We are also offering Level 3 courses for students who have already completed a Level 1 & 2 course.

This is a delivery model that we are keen to deliver county-wide.

Additional Support for Schools
If you need support to engage the students, or their parents/guardians, we can support you. Our instructors may be able to send instructors to deliver an assembly, or to engage families at the school gate.  Please get in touch if you have specific issues that block riders and families from signing up.
